Medicare Parts A, B, C and D

by, Barb Kompelien, Individual Health Insurance Agent at WA Group.

Are you nearing retirement age? Or maybe you’re age 65 and older. Still working, but wondering about Medicare?

Well, Medicare is our national health insurance program for those age 65 and older, for those under age 65 with certain disabilities, and for those with End Stage Renal Disease. Medicare is divided into four major parts: A, B, C and D. Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities or hospice and generally comes to an individual at no additional monthly premium.

Do you qualify?

To qualify, you have to have eligibility and have paid into Medicare taxes during your working years. Part B covers outpatient care. So that includes office visits, lab work, x-rays, maybe outpatient surgery, are all claims filed under Part B. Typically, an individual does need to enroll in Part B to be eligible, because there is a monthly premium, and that premium is determined based on income. Many people will purchase a supplemental plan to help cover expenses left unpaid by original Medicare parts A and B. Those plans are offered by private health insurance companies and do come in at an additional monthly premium. Part C refers to Medicare Advantage Plans. They are plans also offered by private health insurance companies and combine, typically, Parts A, B and sometimes Part D. They are offered at an additional monthly premium. And lastly, Part D covers prescription drugs. They are offered by private health insurance companies as well at an additional monthly premium.
